Dublin: Digital payments firm Monzo has received a full banking licence from the Central Bank of Ireland and the European Central Bank, clearing the way for its expansion into Europe. The approval makes Monzo the first digital bank to be fully regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland.
As part of its European growth strategy, Monzo has confirmed that its Dublin office will serve as the company’s European headquarters. The licence marks a significant milestone in Monzo’s ambition to expand across Europe, with Ireland chosen as the starting point.
Irish customers can now apply for Monzo’s range of products, including personal, joint, business, children’s and instant-access savings accounts, all provided free of charge and issued with Irish IBANs.
Founded in 2015, Monzo has been fully regulated in the UK since 2017 and has grown to serve more than 14 million customers, including over 800,000 businesses. Regulatory approval in Ireland enables the bank to offer its services to individual and business customers across the European market.
Elaine Deehan, Country Manager for Ireland at Monzo, said the launch represents an exciting opportunity to introduce a digital-first bank tailored to the needs of Irish consumers and businesses. She noted that Ireland’s tech-savvy population values simple, digital banking solutions.
Monzo’s services include no maintenance fees, smart budgeting and savings tools, enhanced security features, and 24/7 access to human customer support, all designed to make managing money easier, Deehan said.
