Government Unveils €77m Tourism Expansion Plan to Boost International Visitors

Dublin: The government has announced a major initiative aimed at extending Ireland’s tourism season and increasing international visitor numbers.
Tourism Minister Peter Burke confirmed that a €77 million programme will be rolled out to promote tourism in regions that have traditionally received lower visitor traffic.

As part of the strategy, new direct air routes will be launched, with services planned from Canada, the United States, India and the United Arab Emirates.
While direct flights already exist from Canada, the US and the UAE, India will be added for the first time, with flights expected to commence later this year.

€4.7bn Capital Investment Strategy Announced

Minister Burke unveiled a €4.7 billion capital investment framework spanning the next five years under the government’s National Development Plan.
Key allocations include:

• €1.1 billion to support local businesses
• €400 million for tourism sector development
• €100 million to prepare industrial sites for semiconductor and pharmaceutical manufacturing

The plan also includes additional funding to enhance Ireland’s visibility in the Indian market, targeting a rapidly expanding pool of long-haul travellers.

Start Up Ireland and Innovation Funding

A new initiative, Start Up Ireland, will be launched to help homegrown tourism and hospitality firms scale internationally and build global brand recognition.

The strategy includes:

• €300 million to support decarbonisation projects
• €190 million to accelerate adoption of artificial intelligence and digital innovation within Irish industry

Sector Growth Targeted After Employment Concerns

Concerns about declining employment in the hospitality sector last year prompted the government to prioritise targeted support.

The tourism industry is expected to grow by 6% in 2026, Minister Burke said, adding that the Government hopes to extend the tourist season from St Brigid’s Day to Halloween, significantly boosting regional economies.
