Limerick Woman Jailed for Life Over Murder of Partner’s Four-Year-Old Son

Limerick: A 32-year-old woman has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of her partner’s four-year-old son, following what a judge described as prolonged and “unimaginable” abuse.

Tegan McGee, of no fixed address, was convicted of murdering Mason O’Connell, who died in March 2021 after sustaining catastrophic injuries. The child’s father, John Paul O’Connell, was sentenced to seven years for aiding and abetting the abuse and for neglect likely to cause harm.

Mason was brought to the University Hospital Limerick emergency department on March 13, 2021. McGee and O’Connell claimed he had fallen from a bed. However, medical staff quickly determined his extensive injuries—including brain trauma, fractured ribs, and a torn liver—were consistent with severe assault, not accident. He died three days later on life support.

Evidence presented during the trial showed the child had been subjected to ongoing mistreatment, including isolation and neglect. Mason’s mother, who had mental health challenges at the time, had entrusted her son to McGee and O’Connell. They kept him hidden from relatives, fed him on the floor, and denied family contact, even during celebrations held in the same house.

A pediatric consultant told the court he was “shocked” by the brutality of the injuries, likening them to those suffered in a high-impact crash or a serious fall from height.

Delivering the sentence, Mr Justice Paul McDermott said Mason endured a “terrible period of abuse,” adding that photographs taken in the hospital were “unbearable to look at.” He highlighted a pattern of deception by McGee and the child’s father as they attempted to mislead medical staff and others.

Outside court, Mason’s mother, Conway, described the outcome as bittersweet. She welcomed justice for her son but said nothing could undo the loss of Mason, adding she would never forgive McGee nor O’Connell.
