Storm Chandra Brings Severe Winds and Flooding Disruption Across Ireland

Dublin: Storm Chandra is causing widespread disruption across Ireland, with heavy rain and strong winds leading to flooding, transport cancellations and safety warnings in several counties.

Emergency services have been deployed in Graiguenamanagh, Co. Kilkenny, where intense rainfall and flooding are affecting the area. Met Éireann has warned that the Rivers Barrow and Duiske are at risk of overflowing, urging motorists and residents to exercise caution. Storm Chandra is bringing wind speeds of 95–110 km/h.

Flooding is also impacting parts of Wexford, where the River Slaney has burst its banks in Enniscorthy. Wexford County Council confirmed the closure of Island Road, Templeshannon, Shannon Quay, Abbey Quay and the Promenade due to rising floodwaters. Emergency services continue to monitor conditions.

In Waterford, conditions in Passage East and Tramore Promenade have been described as dangerous, with council officials preparing to activate flood defences. Louth County Council has warned that rivers across the county are at risk of overflowing, adding that sandbags will be made available if required.

Transport has been heavily affected, with most ferry services, including routes between Dublin and Holyhead, cancelled. DART services may also face partial disruption due to flooding risks in parts of Dublin and Wicklow.

Met Éireann has issued a status yellow wind warning nationwide from 3am to 11pm, along with a yellow rain warning for Carlow, Kilkenny, Louth, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow until 11pm. In Northern Ireland, a yellow wind and rain warning is in place across all counties, while an orange wind warning has been issued for Antrim, Down and Derry from 5am to 9pm.

The UK Met Office, which named the system Storm Chandra, warned that very strong winds and heavy rain will continue to cause damage, travel disruption and localised flooding, particularly in southern and eastern areas. Motorists are advised to avoid flooded roads and travel only if necessary.
