Traffic Camera Pilot Launched in Dublin to Target Speeding and Red-Light Violations

Dublin: Authorities have confirmed that the first phase of a long-planned traffic camera programme has been implemented, with systems now operational at selected locations in Dublin. The initiative forms part of the National Safety Camera Strategy and is being introduced on a pilot basis ahead of a nationwide rollout.

Red-light cameras and surveillance systems are currently active in limited areas of the capital to monitor traffic violations. The pilot will be assessed before the scheme is expanded across the country.

Fine Gael TD Naoise O’Muirí has previously acknowledged that delays in rolling out the project have had a negative impact on road safety. With the new technology now in place, authorities say enforcement of traffic rules will become more robust.

While the initial phase focuses on red-light violations, the government plans to expand the system to cover speeding and bus-lane offences in later stages. However, cameras will not be installed immediately in all parts of Dublin or elsewhere in the country, pending an evaluation of the pilot’s effectiveness.

The Department of Transport has urged all road users to comply strictly with traffic regulations, stating that the introduction of camera enforcement is expected to reduce accidents and improve overall road safety.
