Met Éireann Issues Nationwide Yellow Warning as Arctic Air Brings Sub-Zero Temperatures

Dublin: Met Éireann has issued a nationwide Status Yellow cold weather warning as Ireland braces for severe overnight frost and icy conditions.

The alert will be in effect for all counties from 9pm on Friday until 10am on Saturday, with temperatures forecast to fall as low as –4°C. Forecasters have warned that sharp temperature drops could lead to hazardous road conditions, travel disruption and an increased risk of accidents due to ice and frost.

Over the next seven days, temperatures are expected to remain around 2°C below seasonal averages. An incoming Arctic airmass is set to bring clear, crisp conditions with bright sunshine and largely dry weather, though the cold will be intense.

Met Éireann said temperatures will fall rapidly overnight, with widespread frost and icy stretches developing. While conditions are expected to moderate somewhat over the weekend, temperatures are forecast to dip again on Monday night, potentially reaching –3°C.

The forecaster also indicated the possibility of further wintry showers, including snow in some areas, particularly following periods of rain and localised flooding. Looking ahead, next week is expected to remain unsettled and colder than average, with spells of widespread rain and a continued risk of wintry conditions. There are also early indications that another surge of extreme cold could develop towards the end of February.
