1,590 Drivers Caught as Gardaí Intensify Bank Holiday Road Safety Operation

Dublin: Gardaí have detected 1,590 speeding offences during the first two days of the Bank Holiday road safety operation, which began on Thursday and will continue until Tuesday. The nationwide campaign targets the four key “lifesaver” offences—speeding, drink and drug driving, mobile phone use while driving, and failure to wear a seatbelt.

Officers also arrested 200 motorists for offences including mobile phone use and failing to wear a seatbelt, while 39 drivers were detained on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Several motorists were recorded travelling at dangerously excessive speeds, including 172km/h in a 120km/h zone on the M1, 142km/h in a 100km/h zone in Kilkenny, 127km/h in an 80km/h zone in Portlaoise, 126km/h in a 60km/h zone on the Clonmel–Waterford Road, and 115km/h in a 50km/h zone on Dublin’s Clontarf Road.

Gardaí said the operation includes mandatory sobriety testing and high-visibility checkpoints across the country, urging motorists to prioritise road safety and help ensure everyone gets home safely. Notably, no fatal collisions were recorded during the first two days of the operation.
