Blue Teapot Theatre Company Invites Actors with Intellectual Disabilities to Join Full-Time Theatre Ensemble

An esteemed Galway-based theatre company, the Blue Teapot Theatre Company, is actively seeking to broaden its talent pool by inviting aspiring actors with intellectual disabilities to audition for a permanent position within the resident company of artists.

The company is in pursuit of new actors aged 18 and over to join its full-time theatre ensemble, marking an integral aspect of the organisation’s overarching expansion plan as outlined in their Strategic Arts Plan for the next five years.

Artistic Director Petal Pilley shared insights into this talent search, stating, “This autumn presents a unique opportunity to become part of our esteemed professional ensemble. We will be conducting open auditions to select a few individuals, casting a wide net in our quest for exceptional talent. Prior acting experience is not a prerequisite; many actors embark on their careers as raw gems, eagerly seeking an opportunity to shine. The chosen candidates will become part of our dynamic, seasoned group of actors, collaborating to create and perform theatre on Ireland’s prominent stages and beyond.”

Kieran Coppinger, an actor from the company, offers advice to prospective performers, emphasising the importance of being authentic and taking pride in one’s disability. Onstage, he notes, a transformative experience unfolds, offering a unique world of expression and creativity.

Founded over three decades ago, the Blue Teapot Theatre Company has established itself as a pioneering model for inclusive theatre practices, enabling storytelling through the perspective of disability. Their notable artistic achievements include productions like “Sanctuary,” “Dancing at Lughnasa,” and last year’s “Into the Dark Woods,” written by the company’s own Charlene Kelly in collaboration with The Abbey Theatre. The company has received two nominations for the Irish Times Theatre Award.

Renowned stage and screenwriter Christian O’Reilly, who has collaborated regularly with the group, characterises this opportunity as unique. It allows aspiring actors to join an exceptional ensemble of talented individuals and nurtures artistic growth in an environment that is both professional and supportive.

Auditions are scheduled to take place in late November and early December, offering a gateway for aspiring actors with intellectual disabilities to become part of a vibrant and accomplished theatre ensemble.
