Copa America 2021 kicks off today (Sunday), taking football fans to the pinnacle of excitement following the frenzy of the Euro Cup.
The tournament begins with a match between Brazil and Venezuela at 10 pm Irish time. Colombia will face Ecuador in the following match on Monday at 1 pm.
The championship was originally scheduled to take place in Argentina, but due to COVID-19 situations, the venue was shifted to Brazil.
The Copa America, South America’s World Cup, will feature ten teams split into two groups. Group A includes Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, Uruguay, and Chile, while Group B includes Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, and Colombia.
The semi-finals will take place on July 6 and 7, followed by the final on July 11.
Brazil
Brazil, the current Copa America champions, have the best chance of winning the title again. The yellow army is one of the tournament’s strongest teams, and they have a good chance of winning because the games are being played on their home turf. Thiago Silva is their captain.
Brazil will be looking to start the ‘American World Cup’ with a convincing win over Venezuela. Brazil have won four of the last five matches between the two teams, with only one match drawn. Nine-time champions Brazil are aiming for their 10th title.
Argentina
Argentina’s first encounter is against Chile on Monday, June 14th at 10 pm (Irish time). Under the captaincy of Lionel Messi, Argentina have high hopes this time around. Argentina’s other star players are Nicolás González, Nicolás Otamendi, Lautaro Martnez, and Sergio Agüero.
Uruguay
Uruguay also have a strong line-up this time around. Uruguay, led by Diego Godín, has Luis Suárez, Federico Valverde, Edinson Cavani and Facundo Torres. Uruguay’s first opponents will be Argentina in a match on the 19th. The fight between Messi and Suarez will excite fans.
