Danone Expands Recall of Aptamil and Cow & Gate Infant Formula Over Toxin Concern

Dublin: Danone has expanded a precautionary recall to include selected batches of Aptamil and Cow & Gate infant and follow-on formula due to the potential presence of cereulide, a heat-resistant toxin that can cause nausea and severe vomiting, typically within five hours of consumption.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has advised parents and caregivers not to use the recalled products, although no cases of illness have been confirmed in Ireland. Symptoms, if they occur, usually resolve within 6 to 24 hours.

The recall forms part of a wider international action covering products manufactured in Ireland for export to the EU, the UK and other markets. While affected formula was exported, the FSAI noted that some items may have reached Ireland indirectly, including via online purchases from the UK.

FSAI chief executive Greg Dempsey said the situation is evolving globally and acknowledged parental concern, stressing that infant safety remains the top priority. He confirmed that authorities are working closely with manufacturers and European food safety agencies to ensure all affected products are removed from sale.

Danone said it identified low levels of cereulide in specific batches, which have since been replaced, and confirmed that all products currently on sale are safe. The company emphasised that it applies strict quality controls and urged parents to contact healthcare professionals if they have concerns.
