Dublin: The Department of Social Protection has warned the public about fraudulent text messages circulating in the aftermath of Storm Chandra, aimed at deceiving affected households.
The fake messages, falsely claiming to be from “GOV IE,” allege that recipients are eligible for reduced electricity bills under an “Emergency Benefit Scheme.” The texts include a fraudulent link and urge people to click on it. The department has confirmed that these messages are a scam and should be ignored.
Officials stressed that there is currently no emergency benefit scheme in operation related to Storm Chandra. While energy credits have previously been provided to households to help with high energy costs, no such payments are currently being offered.
The department has advised the public not to click on unsolicited links or provide personal or financial information. People are urged to access information on government supports only through official and verified sources.
