Donegal is lauded for its remarkable attributes, including the highest sea cliffs in Europe at Sliabh Liag, towering at 601 metres (1,972 feet), and an extensive network of unspoiled coastal hiking trails along the Wild Atlantic Way. The region’s rich tapestry also encompasses ancient forts, vibrant musical traditions, and a deep-rooted heritage in the Irish language, offering an immersive experience for inquisitive travellers.

The top three regions featured in Lonely Planet’s rankings for 2024 are the Trans Dinarica in the Western Balkans, the Cycling Route of Kangaroo Island in Australia, and Tuscany, Italy. Donegal secures its place as an exceptional global destination, standing out among a competitive field.

Tourism Ireland’s Chief Executive Designate, Alice Mansergh, welcomed this prestigious recognition, noting that it will undoubtedly inspire international travellers to include Donegal and Ireland on their list of desired destinations for the coming year. She extended her gratitude to Lonely Planet and offered congratulations to all the dedicated tourism and hospitality providers in the beautiful region of Donegal.

In previous years, Dublin was celebrated as the seventh-best city in the world to visit in 2022, and Galway earned the distinction of being the fourth-best in 2020.
