€1.3m Spent on Fit-Out of New Irish Embassy in Tokyo

Dublin: The Department of Foreign Affairs spent over €1.3 million on furnishing and fitting out Ireland’s new embassy in Tokyo, including €43,000 for a commissioned tapestry and more than €1,000 on umbrella stands.

The new Ireland House, opened this summer, forms part of a wider €35 million project in the Shinjuku district. Fit-out costs covered furniture contracts exceeding €1.1 million, artwork purchases linked to Ireland’s Expo 2025 presence, and everyday items such as white goods, kitchen equipment and soft furnishings.

The overall development includes €7.74 million for the site, €26.7 million for design and construction, and additional legal and consultancy costs. The department said the investment and artwork purchases aim to enhance Ireland’s profile in Japan and showcase Irish culture under the government’s 1% for Art scheme.
