€4 Million Boost for Breast Cancer Research Announced in Galway
Dublin: A €4 million investment in breast cancer research has been unveiled in Galway, funded entirely through donations and fundraising for the National Breast Cancer Research Institute. The funding will support enhanced diagnostics, early genetic risk detection, and improved treatments.
Key initiatives include the creation of new academic and research roles at the University of Galway and the introduction of advanced digital imaging technologies, previously unavailable in Ireland. These technologies will allow for faster, more detailed tumour analysis, helping to tailor therapies more effectively.
Professor Sharon Glynn hailed the development as a “game changer”, enhancing ongoing research and boosting international collaboration. The initiative will focus on tumour cell communication, biomarker detection, and new therapy development.
University Interim President Peter McHugh and Lambe Institute Chair Caroline Loughnane credited the nationwide fundraising efforts for making the project possible. Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill officially launched the programme.
