Fashion retailer Gap to close 19 stores in UK and Ireland

DUBLIN: Gap, a fashion retailer based in the US, has announced intentions to shutter 19 stores in the UK and Ireland next month.

The company plans to close stores when their lease expires in July, but the move is also intended to bring the brand back to growth.

“We are proposing to close 19 Gap stores in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland that have leases ending at the end of July 2021. These leases are not being extended due to the strategic review that we have under way,” a spokeswoman for the company said.

It is unclear how many jobs would be impacted by company’s latest move.

In October, the firm revealed that it was assessing its operations due to a drop in sales and was considering closing stores in the UK and Ireland as well as France and Italy.

Gap said it is “keen to maintain a presence in Europe”, but that this may entail a greater focus on online sales.

The clothing and accessories retailer has stores in Blanchardstown, Dundrum, and Henry Street in Dublin, as well as one in Limerick.
