FIFA Awards 2023 Highlights

Lionel Messi was crowned FIFA Player of the Year on Monday after Argentina won their World Cup in Qatar in December. The 35-year-old forward scored two goals in Argentina’s World Cup final victory over France on penalties after a 3-3 draw after extra time.

Alexia Putellas of Spain was the top women’s player for the second year in a row. Putellas was presented with her prize by Alex Morgan of the United States and Beth Mead, who led England to the 2022 European Championship victory.

Earlier, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni was named FIFA men’s coach of the year after leading his side to a World Cup victory in December. Sarina Wiegman, who guided England to the women’s European Championship victory, received the women’s coach award. The top women’s keeper was England’s Mary Earps, while the best men’s keeper was Argentina’s World Cup champion Emiliano Martnez.
