Fine Gael to Publish Blueprint for a United Ireland at November Ard Fheis

Dublin: Fine Gael has renewed its push for discussions on Irish unity, with party leader and Tánaiste Simon Harris announcing plans to publish a comprehensive blueprint for a united Ireland later this year.

The document is expected to be unveiled at the party’s Ard Fheis in November and will outline what a united Ireland could look like politically, economically and socially.

Harris made the announcement during an event at University College Dublin marking the centenary of former Taoiseach Garret FitzGerald.

The initiative will be overseen by Fine Gael’s Northern Ireland Engagement Group and chaired by academic Deirdre Heenan.

According to Harris, the aim is to ensure that discussions about the future of the island are “informed, inclusive and grounded in reality.”

Focus on Practical Implications of Unity

The proposed blueprint will examine key issues associated with constitutional change, including:

• Economic impacts of Irish unity

• Public services and governance structures

• Potential economic opportunities arising from unification

• Social and political implications for communities North and South

Harris said any discussion about the island’s future must move beyond slogans and be based on careful planning and evidence.

“If constitutional change is to happen, it must be prepared carefully, honestly and inclusively,” he said, stressing that all traditions and communities across the island must be respected.

‘Unity Is a Process, Not an Event’

Rejecting suggestions that the timing is inappropriate, Harris argued that now is the right moment to engage in serious preparation for any potential constitutional change.

He said all political parties have a responsibility to contribute constructively to discussions on the future of the island.

According to Harris, reconciliation and mutual respect should underpin any debate on unity.

“Unity is not an event. It is a process that requires leadership, planning and patience,” he said.

Sinn Féin Welcomes Move

Meanwhile, Mary Lou McDonald welcomed Fine Gael’s decision to begin preparing for Irish unity.

She said it was positive that the need for planning had now been acknowledged and called on Harris to secure broader government support for the initiative.

McDonald also urged support for forthcoming Sinn Féin proposals in the Dáil, including the preparation of a Green Paper on Irish unity and the establishment of an all-island citizens’ assembly.
