Flood Risk Remains High in South-East as Further Heavy Rain Forecast

Dublin: The Met Office has warned that the risk of flooding could increase again across south-eastern parts of Ireland, from Dublin to Waterford, as further rainfall is forecast in the coming days. Additional rain could lead to renewed river flooding, particularly in already saturated catchment areas.

A Status Yellow rain warning is in place for counties Carlow, Dublin, Kilkenny, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow and Waterford from 9am today until midnight.

Meteorological experts say that continuous light rainfall over the past seven days, including during Storm Chandra, has significantly worsened flooding conditions. The Met Office noted that rainfall expected later today, especially after midday, is of particular concern.

Wexford County Council has warned that flood risk along the River Slaney, especially in Enniscorthy, will remain high throughout the Bank Holiday weekend. With rivers already at full capacity and ground conditions extremely wet, further rainfall could lead to renewed surface and river flooding.

The National Emergency Coordination Group has urged the public to exercise extreme caution. Its chair, Keith Leonard, said the flood threat could persist into next week.

The Met Office added that high river levels and saturated ground increase the likelihood of localised flooding, waterlogging and travel disruption.

Authorities in County Wexford remain on high alert following Storm Chandra. The council reported that 79.6mm of rain fell between January 22 and 28, and repair work on damaged roads, pipes and manholes is ongoing. Residents and businesses in Enniscorthy and Bunclody have been warned that the flood risk is “extremely high”.

South Dublin County Council has also cautioned travellers, saying the risk of flooding remains elevated due to swollen rivers and saturated ground. Clean-up operations and flood-preparedness measures are continuing.

The Road Safety Authority has advised motorists to take extra care, particularly on routes prone to flooding.
