France becomes the first defending champion to reach successive finals since Brazil in 2002

France will face Argentina in the World Cup final after defeating Morocco 2-0 in an exciting semi-final to maintain their title defence and terminate the North Africans’ fairytale run in Qatar.

France became the first defending champion to reach consecutive finals since Brazil in 2002. They will now attempt to become only the third team to retain the championship, after Brazil (1962) and Italy (1938).

France took an early lead in the fifth minute thanks to an acrobatic goal from fullback Theo Hernandez. Morocco had over 60% of the possession in the game, but substitute Randal Kolo Muani clinched the win for France with a late goal in the 79th minute.

Morocco will now face Croatia in the third-place playoff.
