Germany and Poland Pledge Joint Leadership for Europe’s Economic Revival

Warsaw: The finance ministers of Germany and Poland have agreed to take joint responsibility for driving Europe’s economic revival, citing concerns that the continent’s growth is lagging behind global competitors such as the United States and China.

Speaking after talks in Warsaw on Monday, Polish Finance Minister Andrzej Domański and German Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said Europe must urgently strengthen its competitiveness amid mounting geopolitical and economic challenges. These include security threats from Russia, trade and political tensions with the US administration, and uncertainty in relations with China.

The partnership is being viewed as a new front within the European Union, reflecting a growing trend toward ad hoc coalitions that allow member states to advance key projects without requiring unanimous approval from all 27 EU members. Such an approach has been used in the past for major initiatives, including the creation of the euro.

Domański said Europe needs policies that will restore its status as an economic powerhouse rather than a purely regulatory authority. He added that Poland is ready to work closely with Germany to develop reforms that boost growth and competitiveness across the bloc.

Klingbeil, on his first visit to Poland since taking office, acknowledged the complexities facing the EU, particularly in the context of transatlantic relations. He said Europe must become “faster, smarter and better able to deal with complexity” and stressed the need to overcome decision-making bottlenecks that have stalled key initiatives.

The ministers discussed ways to accelerate cooperation within existing EU frameworks, including the Eurogroup of eurozone finance ministers. Klingbeil emphasised that the initiative is not about creating new decision-making structures but about building common positions that can be advanced more effectively within the EU.

“This is just the beginning,” Klingbeil said, confirming that further discussions are planned, with another meeting expected soon in Brussels.
