Google has unveiled its Year In Search results for 2023, providing insights into the topics that captured the attention of the Irish population throughout the year.

The year proved to be captivating both locally and globally, with notable films and products dominating public interest.

In the realm of ‘What is’ queries, ChatGPT and AI secured positions in the top 10, reflecting the heightened curiosity surrounding these popular chatbots. Of particular note was the fifth most searched topic in this category, ‘What is Threads,’ as the potential competitor to X (formerly Twitter) garnered significant attention, albeit fleetingly.

The film industry witnessed substantial interest, with releases like Oppenheimer and Barbie claiming the top two spots in the movie section. Following closely was the acclaimed film ‘Banshees of Inisherin,’ set on the west coast of Ireland, gaining recognition on a global scale.

Notably, searches for celebrities embroiled in various controversies dominated the top spots, with Russell Brand, Huw Edwards, and Philip Schofield securing the first three positions. Ryan Tubridy, connected to RTÉ’s payment scandal, claimed the fourth spot, outpacing even the searches for US President Joe Biden, who visited Ireland earlier in the year. The recently appointed presenter of The Late Late Show, Patrick Kielty, secured the seventh position.

The music world mourned the loss of several Irish legends, with names like Sinéad O’Connor, Shane MacGowan, and Christy Dignam featured prominently in the ‘Losses’ list. Additionally, Ireland expressed interest in other notable losses globally, including Matthew Perry, Tina Turner, and Lisa Marie Presley.

Against the backdrop of an uncertain economy, the most-searched question in Ireland revolved around navigating the complexities of claiming rent tax credit. Other questions that piqued curiosity included unexpected inquiries like “how to use chopsticks” and “how to solve a Rubik’s cube.”
