Government Orders 100 New DART Carriages in €174m Upgrade

Dublin: The Department of Transport has approved the purchase of 100 energy-efficient DART carriages to replace the original fleet that has been in service since 1984. The €173.9 million order brings total government investment in new DART trains to about €670 million.

Placed with manufacturer Alstom by Iarnród Éireann through the National Transport Authority, the new carriages will operate on the Greystones–Malahide/Howth coastal line. They form part of a wider programme that will see 285 new DART carriages delivered as 57 five-car trains.

Officials said the investment will improve reliability, accessibility and passenger comfort while boosting capacity across the Greater Dublin Area. The upgrades are a key element of the DART+ Programme, which aims to double rail capacity in Dublin in response to record demand.
