Ireland Records Hottest April Temperature in History
Dublin: Ireland has experienced its highest April temperature on record, according to provisional data released by Met Éireann. The extraordinary heatwave saw temperatures soar to 25.9°C in Athenry, County Galway, surpassing the previous national April record of 25.8°C set in Glenties, County Donegal, in 1984.
Met Éireann reported that all 17 weather stations across the country registered record-breaking temperatures for the month, marking an unprecedented start to the early summer season. Meteorologists have described the conditions as an unusually warm onset of summer, with the current spell of dry and settled weather expected to continue through the bank holiday weekend due to sustained high pressure. However, cooler temperatures are expected during nighttime and early morning hours.
In response to the heatwave, the Department of Public Health has issued advisories warning of potential health risks associated with high temperatures. The Health Service Executive (HSE) recommends wearing lightweight, full-coverage clothing, using broad-spectrum sunscreen, and wearing hats and sunglasses to protect against sun exposure.
The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has also raised concerns over an elevated risk of wildfires. An orange forest fire warning is currently in effect and will remain in place until May 6. This warning comes in light of previous wildfire incidents in gorse-covered areas during similar weather conditions.
Authorities have urged visitors to public parks and recreation areas to avoid lighting open fires or using barbecues, which could trigger wildfires in dry vegetation. Additionally, Water Safety Ireland has issued a reminder for those entering open waters to exercise extreme caution, noting that lifeguard services will not resume until mid-June.
Officials continue to monitor conditions closely and encourage the public to follow safety guidelines as the unusual heat persists.
