Israel Solidarity Rally in Dublin Tomorrow; Israel Summons and Reprimands Irish Ambassador

Dublin: In a show of solidarity with Israel, a rally will be held in Dublin tomorrow, Sunday, at 3 p.m. The rally will start from Harcourt Street near St. Stephen’s Green and proceed to Parliament House. Several pro-Israel organisations in Ireland are sponsoring the event.

The announcement comes amidst diplomatic tensions following Ireland’s recognition of the state of Palestine. Israel has strongly condemned this decision, summoning Ireland’s Ambassador, Sonya McGuinness, to the Israeli Foreign Ministry. During the meeting, Ambassador McGuinness was shown a previously unaired video of Palestinian Hamas holding Israeli female soldiers hostage on October 7, 2023. The incident, which included the presence of journalists, has sparked criticism from Irish officials.

Deputy Prime Minister’s Response

Deputy Prime Minister and Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin has labelled Israel’s actions as “totally unacceptable.” He emphasised that it was inappropriate for Israel to involve the media during the ambassador’s reprimand. Martin stated that he plans to discuss the matter with Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz, reinforcing that the conduct displayed towards Ambassador McGuinness was unprecedented in diplomatic practice.

Israel’s Warning and Ireland’s Stand

Israel has accused Ireland and Minister Simon Harris of “paying for terror” by recognising Palestine, warning of severe consequences. The Israeli government has indicated that ambassadors from Ireland, Norway, and Spain will be shown footage from October 7, which they claim initiated the current violence. Despite expecting a diplomatic summoning, Irish officials were taken aback by the public display involving national media, an approach not previously seen in similar diplomatic contexts.
