It’s official: Brazil will host Copa America 2021

Brazil will host this year’s Copa America tournament, South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) announced on Monday.

The CONMEBOL said in a statement that the tournament’s start and finish dates have been confirmed. The oldest international championship will kick off on 13 June, with the final on 10 July.

Initially, Colombia and Argentina had planned to hold the tournament together. But Colombia was initially excluded from hosting due to security issues, while Argentina has decided not to hold the tournament due to an increase in COVID-19 cases.

Argentina is currently under lockdown following a sharp rise in coronavirus cases. Local football matches were also suspended in Argentina. The United States, Chile, and Paraguay were all considered as potential venues, but Brazil was chosen at the last minute.

Brazil also hosted the previous Copa America in 2019, and they won the championship. Peru was runners-up, followed by Argentina in third and Chile in fourth.
