“Met Office Warns of Impending Storm Kathleen’s Arrival in Ireland This Saturday”

Dublin: Met Éireann has issued a warning regarding the impending arrival of Storm Kathleen, set to hit Ireland on Saturday. Precautionary measures have been taken, with an orange alert declared in five counties, effective from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m..

Additionally, a special yellow warning has been issued across the country from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday due to anticipated strong southerly winds.

Counties Cork, Kerry, Waterford, Galway, and Mayo are specifically under the warning. Met Éireann forecasts unsettled weather with rain and strong winds throughout Ireland.

Met Éireann has warned that southerly winds will intensify to gale force, potentially leading to tree uprooting, power outages, coastal flooding, and wave intrusion.

In response to the storm threat, KWD Recycling and Kerry County Council have postponed county clean-up events scheduled for Saturday. The council has also extended rubbish collections until April 14, anticipating hazardous conditions persisting into Sunday.

Storm Kathleen marks the 11th storm of the 2023–2024 season, which spans from September to August. It is named after Irish crystallographer Kathleen Lonsdale. Notably, Ireland has experienced four recent storms, with Kathleen being the latest. Previous storms include Jocelyn in January, Isha on January 21, Eliza in November, and Geraldine in December, all causing damage in the country.

The UK Met Office has also issued warnings in coordination with Met Éireann, listing storm names shared across Ireland, the UK, and the Netherlands. In tandem, the UK Meteorological Centre has issued a yellow alert for several counties in Northern Ireland due to expected strong winds, effective from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday. The alert advises caution due to potential strong winds in low-pressure areas.
