He praised India’s innovative online payment systems, particularly emphasising the widespread use of mobile phones for transactions. Coveney underscored Ireland’s potential as a gateway for India into the European Union, particularly with the anticipated realisation of the FTA by year-end. Drawing parallels between Ireland and India’s historical struggles for independence, he emphasised the deep-rooted connections between the two nations.


Coveney highlighted the burgeoning opportunities for collaboration between Irish and Indian companies, particularly in technology-driven sectors such as cybersecurity. He underscored Ireland’s capability to contribute significantly to India’s technology-based economy. The Minister emphasised the importance of upcoming political events, such as European Union elections and elections in India, in potentially expediting the implementation of the FTA.
Reflecting on his observations during a stroll through Mumbai’s streets, Coveney noted the impressive sight of street vendors conducting transactions through mobile phones, highlighting India’s rapid technological advancement. He emphasised the potential for Irish companies and digital platforms with secure payment systems to thrive in the Indian market.
Furthermore, Minister Coveney addressed India and Ireland’s shared stance on global issues, including the conflict in Gaza and Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. Both countries advocated for a ceasefire in Gaza and humanitarian aid for its civilian population. Ireland condemned Hamas’ terrorist attacks on Israeli citizens while urging an end to the devastating conflict. Additionally, Ireland stood in solidarity with Ukraine against Russia’s violation of international borders, emphasising the need for global unity in addressing such challenges. Coveney acknowledged India’s vocal support in these international matters, highlighting the significance of collective action for global peace and security.
