Dublin: The Department of Health to review the nutritional standards of Ireland’s hot school meals programme, which has expanded to cover 2,850 primary schools, benefiting 475,000 children as of April 11.
Social Protection Minister Dara Calleary confirmed the review, aiming to remove foods high in saturated fat, sugar, and salt from menus by September 2025. A dietitian, under Health Department supervision, will conduct the review, with findings expected by year-end.
The minister also plans to increase inspections and ensure suppliers follow stricter nutritional guidelines while encouraging remaining schools to join the scheme.
Education Minister Helen McEntee praised the programme’s impact on attendance and learning outcomes, highlighting the importance of ensuring meals are not only hot but also nutritious and balanced. The government also aims to tackle food waste and promote the use of recyclable packaging.
