Pregnant women and people in their 50s will receive vaccine from this week

DUBLIN: The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recently announced that pregnant women and people in their 50s will receive their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine from this week. The HSE plans to vaccinate between 220,000 and 240,000 people this week.

About one lakh people in their 50s are expected to be vaccinated over the coming days. Registration for people between the ages of 50 and 60 began on May 4. The government says most of them will be able to get their first dose of the vaccine as soon as possible.

There were recommendations that women who are 14 to 36 weeks pregnant should be vaccinated after consulting a doctor. Following this, the HSE chief clinical officer Dr. Colm Henry said that maternity units are now identifying pregnant women who are at an appropriate gestational stage to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

HSE Chief Paul Reid said the revised vaccination plan submitted by HSE has yet to be approved by CMO Dr. Tony Holohan. If the revised plan is approved, HSE will be able to administer any available vaccine to people regardless of age.

As of 6 May, 1,746,912 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Ireland. 1,267,167 people have received their first dose and 479,745 people received their second dose. It is estimated that 32.6% of the population received a single dose.

Damien McCallion, who is in charge of the vaccine program, warned Cert students to avoid parties and gatherings because of the high risk of infection. If students are affected they will not be able to appear for the exam.

More than 436,000 people in their 60s and 50s have registered for a vaccine but have yet to receive an appointment. “We are trying to plan seven to ten days out so we can get appointments out to people and have the vaccination centre schedule, similarly with GPs as well,” Mr. McCallion said.
