Preparing for Cold and Flu Season as Winter Approaches..

Dublin: With winter approaching, many Irish people are concerned about catching colds and flu, which are most common in the colder months. Health reports estimate that one in three people may contract the flu in the coming weeks, and 80% of those affected may need medical attention. Common symptoms include fever, headache, and cough, and two out of five individuals could face time off work due to illness.

Health Workers’ Advice for Managing Cold and Flu

1. Stay Home if You’re Sick: Health professionals advise staying home if you have a cold or flu symptoms such as a runny nose, headache, sore throat, muscle pain, or cough. Taking time off to rest can support recovery and prevent the spread of illness.

2. Practice Good Hand Hygiene: Frequent and thorough handwashing is essential for reducing the risk of spreading cold and flu viruses. At the workplace, make it a habit to wash your hands regularly. Use a tissue when sneezing or coughing, dispose of it in a bin, and wash your hands afterward.

3. Keep Your Workspace Clean: Sanitising your workstation, including desks, computers, phones, and door handles, is a proactive way to minimise germs. Using hand sanitiser regularly can also help reduce exposure.

4. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: Health experts remind everyone to keep healthy habits year-round. Regular physical activity, sufficient sleep, rest, and a nutritious diet all contribute to a strong immune system, which is essential for combating seasonal illnesses. Vitamin C is especially helpful in boosting immunity.

5. Get the Flu Vaccine: The flu vaccine, available from October to April, is recommended as a primary measure to avoid seasonal illness. It is particularly important for those over 65, children, and individuals in vulnerable health categories. If symptoms do appear, consulting a pharmacist can offer guidance on relief options.

6. Recommended Treatments: HSE-approved treatments, such as Solpadol and Flu Multi Relief Max powder, provide effective relief for symptoms including headache, congestion, and fever. These are suitable for adults and those over 16, with a doctor’s approval.

7. Ayurvedic and Home Remedies: Natural remedies like warm lemon juice with honey, consumed three times daily, can soothe a sore throat. A mixture of ginger and honey is also considered helpful for cold relief. Warm honey applied around the nose has long been suggested as a remedy for easing nasal congestion.
