President Joe Biden Withdraws from Presidential Election….

Washington: In a significant development, US President Joe Biden has announced his withdrawal from the upcoming presidential election. Biden, who is of Irish descent, made this announcement through social media, suggesting that Vice President Kamala Harris should be the Democratic candidate to succeed him. If supported by the party, Harris could become the first female president of the United States.

Biden’s campaign activities had already been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. On the social media platform X, Biden announced that he is currently ill with COVID-19, marking his third bout with the virus. This latest diagnosis came just before a key election rally in Las Vegas aimed at garnering support from Latino voters.

White House Press Secretary Karin Jean-Pierre confirmed that Biden is self-isolating at his Delaware home with mild symptoms, including a cough and runny nose, and is receiving immunotherapy.

Health Concerns and Decision to Withdraw

Biden had previously indicated that he might reconsider his candidacy if his health deteriorated. In an earlier interview, he mentioned that he would take medical advice into account when deciding whether to continue his campaign. Despite strong calls for his withdrawal, Biden had initially reiterated his intention to run.

His decision to withdraw comes after a lacklustre performance in his first televised debate against election rival and former president Donald Trump. Media criticism of his vague responses, fumbling for words, and addressing people by the wrong names added pressure for him to step down.

Pressure from Democratic Leaders

Prominent Democratic leaders, including Adam Schiff, Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jeffries, and over twenty other party figures, had urged Biden to withdraw. It was reported that former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi personally told Biden that he could not defeat Trump in the current situation. Recently, former President Barack Obama also expressed the opinion that Biden should reconsider his candidacy due to his slim chances of winning the election, urging him to seriously consider the possibility.

A report by the Associated Press and the NRC Centre for Public Affairs Research revealed that two-thirds of Americans wanted Biden to step aside.

Path Forward for Kamala Harris

With Biden’s withdrawal, there are strong indications that Vice President Kamala Harris may become the Democratic presidential candidate. A decision regarding her candidacy is expected before August.
