Proud moment for Indians in Ireland: Dr. Tony Thomas appointed to the top post in Health Service
DUBLIN: Dr. Tony Thomas Poovelikunnel has been named as Ireland’s National Director of Health Protection Nursing Services. This is the first time an Indian has reached this position.
He has been highly regarded in the healthcare sector for his services, when he was serving as Assistant Director of Infection Prevention and Control at Beaumont Hospital (Level Four) in Ireland.
Dr. Thomas’ Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) unit at Beaumont Hospital has gained a lot of attention and has set a good example for COVID-19 care in Ireland.
He has served as Faculty and Lecturer, Research Associate and Program Coordinator at the Royal College of Surgeons. His observations and findings have provided guidance to the area of public health care at a time when there have been no major practical interventions or convictions in addressing it in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Thomas’ findings and awareness of pandemic have been of great help to care homes, colleges of health sciences, and health professionals. He has shared extensive information on COVID-19 safety and care in publications and portals of the Department of Health.
He received a €250,000 Health Research Award from the Irish Health Research Board. He was also awarded a Research Scholarship by the Hospital Infection Society (UK) last year to benefit from clinical research. Leading researcher Dr. Tony Thomas has published over thirty publications and numerous research papers.
He was one of the earliest Malayali (Keralite) immigrants to Ireland and currently lives with his family in Beaumont, Dublin. Dr. Tony hails from Kanjirapally in Kottayam district and completed his education at AKJM School. He then studied Nursing at Kottayam Medical College and an MBA from University College Dublin. He also holds a Master’s degree in theology from Dublin City University.
