Refugees Protest Near Leinster House, Demanding Regularisation and Halt to Deportations

Dublin: Refugees have staged a public protest in Dublin, challenging Ireland’s immigration and deportation policies. The demonstration, which has been ongoing for the past three weeks, escalated on Tuesday as protesters gathered near Leinster House, calling for permission to remain in the country and for formal recognition of their status.

Hundreds of protesters, including families with children, took part in the demonstration. Carrying banners reading “Stop Deportations,” they demanded an amnesty that would allow them to regularise their stay in Ireland. The protest led to traffic disruption on Molesworth Street, adjacent to Leinster House.

The demonstration follows the government’s offer of a voluntary return scheme, under which individuals who agree to leave Ireland are offered financial assistance of up to €10,000. Protest organisers said none of the participants were willing to accept the compensation, insisting instead on the right to remain and settle in Ireland.

In addition to the street protest, a group of refugees has set up tents near the Department of Agriculture in the capital as part of a continuing sit-in demonstration.
