Report Warns of Growing Influence of Global Far-Right on Anti-Immigration Groups in Ireland

Dublin: The Global Project Against Hate and Extremism (GPAHE) has warned that international far-right networks are increasingly influencing anti-immigration groups in Ireland, raising concerns about the spread of extremist narratives.

In a newly published report, the organisation says Ireland has drawn the attention of global far-right groups, despite the absence of a strong or well-organised domestic far-right movement. GPAHE notes that some anti-immigrant groups in Ireland are adopting rhetoric, tactics and talking points commonly used by extremist organisations abroad.

According to the report, issues such as the housing crisis, crime and pressure on public infrastructure are being exploited by far-right actors to fuel hostility towards immigrants. Narratives claiming that immigrants are “taking homes,” increasing crime or threatening Irish culture mirror messaging seen in other countries.

Wendy Via, co-founder and president of GPAHE, said Ireland’s profile as a predominantly English-speaking country makes it of interest to international far-right groups. While Ireland’s far-right remains fragmented and lacks formal organisation, she warned that those involved often engage in political discourse similar to that used by far-right politicians and protesters elsewhere.

The report argues that periods of economic strain and social dissatisfaction provide fertile ground for extremist messaging, adding that Ireland is not immune to these dynamics. However, GPAHE stressed that this does not mean the country is facing an imminent extremist threat.

The organisation urged the public and civil society groups to remain vigilant, warning that misinformation and scapegoating can gradually normalise anti-immigrant sentiment. It also cautioned against narratives that undermine democratic values by deliberately creating perceived enemies within society.
