Sudden Shift in Irish Weather Brings Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain After Heatwave
Dublin: Ireland’s recent heatwave is set to come to an abrupt end as Met Éireann has warned of thunderstorms, heavy rain, and a significant drop in temperatures across parts of the country. The national forecaster has cautioned that the unsettled conditions could lead to localised flooding, travel disruptions, and the cancellation of outdoor events.
Weather Alerts Issued
A Yellow Rain Warning remains in effect for Connacht until 5 a.m. this morning. A more severe Orange Alert, issued for Mayo, expired at 10 p.m. last night. Previous yellow-level alerts for Clare, Kerry, Limerick, and other parts of Connacht have also now ended.
Met Éireann stated that the weather will remain volatile into next week, with cloudy skies and persistent rainfall expected to dominate much of the forecast.
Record Temperatures Precede Storms
Before the weather turned, Ireland experienced some of the highest temperatures on record this year. The Mount Dillon Meteorological Station in Roscommon recorded a peak of 31.1°C, the highest temperature so far this year. Other high readings included 30.1°C in Oak Park, Carlow, and 30°C at both Shannon Airport and Mullingar in Westmeath.
Crowds Flock to Beaches Amid Heatwave
The heatwave sent thousands of people to Dublins popular beaches, including Burrow Beach and Donabate, resulting in severe traffic congestion and overcrowding. Due to safety concerns and excessive noise, Burrow Beach was temporarily closed, Gardaí confirmed.
Authorities also reported large amounts of litter left behind by beachgoers. In response, special clean-up crews were deployed, and Gardaí increased their presence, including members of the Public Order Unit, over the weekend.
Additional lifeguards and traffic enforcement officers were also stationed at beaches. Gardaí issued numerous fines for illegal parking near Donabate Beach, urging the public to follow safety and traffic regulations during peak beach hours.
As Ireland transitions from intense summer heat to unstable weather conditions, officials are urging the public to remain vigilant, follow Met Éireann updates, and take necessary precautions when travelling or attending outdoor events.
