Travel Confirmation Notice Scheme Extended to Prevent Disruption for Non-EEA Residents

Dublin: The Travel Confirmation Notice Scheme has been extended for a further four weeks to prevent travel disruption for thousands of non-EEA professionals and their families living in Ireland, the Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) has confirmed.

The Department of Justice has extended the validity of Irish Residence Permit (IRP) cards due to expire at midnight on January 31 until February 28, mirroring a similar measure introduced last year. The extension order was issued on the evening of January 30.

Under the arrangement, individuals who applied online to renew their IRP before its expiry may travel without a new physical card by presenting three documents: a downloadable Travel Confirmation Notice, their most recent IRP card, and proof of having submitted a renewal application on time, such as an ISD email receipt. Airlines and border officials have been instructed to accept these documents as temporary evidence of lawful residence in Ireland.

The ISD had already extended the exemption by six weeks in December to ease seasonal pressure at registration offices. Without the measure, delays in card issuance would have forced many residents—including employees of multinational companies—to cancel travel plans or apply for costly single-entry re-entry visas.

The Department of Justice emphasised that the exemption applies only to residents who renewed their permits within the required timeframe. Individuals who have overstayed their permission will still be required to obtain a re-entry visa.

Officials have advised travelers to carry printed copies of all three documents and to check visa requirements for any transit countries, noting that the Travel Confirmation Notice guarantees re-entry to Ireland only at the final point of arrival.
