Turkey – Syria Earthquake: Death toll tops 21,000

Rescuers struggled to discover survivors as the death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria exceeded 21,000 people. So far, Turkey has seen 1,509 aftershocks, with tens of thousands wounded or evacuated.

On Thursday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoan continued his visit to the devastated areas. He attempted to deflect criticism of the reaction by claiming that it was improving. He reaffirmed to earthquake survivors that wrecked houses would be restored within a year. He stated that the government will give affected families 10,000 Turkish lira (USD 532).

Meanwhile, on Thursday, the first UN convoy transporting emergency aid to a rebel-held part of Syria crossed the border from Turkey. The trucks, carrying everything from jerrycans to blankets, travelled via the Bab Al Hawa border to Idlib city in northwest Syria, where 4 million people, many of whom had been displaced by the civil war, had relied on help even before Monday’s earthquake.
