Volkswagen to rename its electric vehicle operations in US as “Voltswagen”

The German automaker Volkswagen has announced that it will rename its US operations as “Voltswagen”. The company says the name change is due to its focus on electric vehicles, but added that there will be no change in the brand’s commitment. The revised name will take effect in May.

The announcement came after many media outlets reported on Monday that a draft release had been mistakenly posted on the company’s US website. Similar moves are expected in other regions.

The move was confirmed by president and CEO of Voltswagen of America. “We might be changing out our K for a T, but what we aren’t changing is this brand’s commitment to making best-in-class vehicles for drivers and people everywhere,” said Scott Keogh.

The traditional VW Dark Blue colour logo will remain for petrol and diesel vehicles, while a new light blue logo will be used for electric vehicles. Founded in 1937, the German automaker aims to sell one million EVs worldwide by 2025.

After accelerating its transition to fully electric vehicles, the world’s second-largest motor vehicle manufacturer aims to double electric vehicle deliveries and increase profits for its core brand this year. According to Reuters, the company decides to invest €16 billion in electrification and digitalisation by 2025.

The company will use “Voltswagen” as an exterior badge on all EV models, while other cars will only have the VW logo. The exterior and interior signs can soon be seen on all US properties and dealerships, company said.
