Zanzibar will be home to the first-ever Indian Institute of Technology campus outside of India

Tanzania’s Zanzibar will be home to the first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus outside of India, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). This agreement was signed in the presence of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi.

As per the MEA, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to create an IIT Madras campus in Zanzibar, an archipelago off the East African coast that is also part of Tanzania. “The first IIT campus to be established outside India will be in Zanzibar,” the MEA said. An MoU was signed between India’s education ministry, IIT Madras, and Zanzibar’s ministry of education and vocational training.

This spread of the acclaimed IIT system beyond Indian boundaries fosters educational collaboration and opportunity in the area.

“This campus reflects India and Tanzania’s longstanding friendship and serves as a reminder of India’s focus on building people-to-people ties across Africa and the Global South,” the MEA stated.

The campus, named IIT Madras at Zanzibar, will open in October 2023 and will initially accept 50 undergraduate students and 20 master’s students. Zanzibar will join Abu Dhabi and Kuala Lumpur as one of IIT’s three foreign campuses.
