An investigation into the shooting death of George Nkencho has been completed

Dublin: The Garda Ombudsman Commission has completed its investigation into a Garda officer’s controversial shooting death of a mentally ill young man at his home. The inquiry’s draft report has been submitted for legal review.

Following a confrontation with garda, George Nkencho (27) was shot dead in the front yard of his home in Colony, West Dublin, in December 2020. The incident happened in front of his brothers. At 12:35 p.m., Nkencho was shot. George had previously assaulted the shop owner at Eurospar. After that, the garda chased him.

The garda repeatedly asked George to put down the knife. He, however, refused. The garda officers were threatened. Two members of the Armed Support Unit had arrived by the time George ran home. They had no idea it was George’s house. They suspected that hostages were being held inside the house. They then used pepper spray on them. Tried to taser him twice, but George continued to threaten with the knife. The shooting happened later.

If the commission of inquiry finds no wrongdoing on the part of the Gardaí, it may recommend that no further action be taken. The file could also be sent to the DPP for this purpose. Alternatively, the offending officer may face criminal or disciplinary action. There is currently no information available about the content of the commission’s report.
