British sports and fashion retailer JD Sports Fashion has been the victim of a cyber attack
In a cyberattack, hackers might have acquired the personal and financial information of 10 million consumers, as per fashion retailer JD Sports.
The problem, which affected some online orders placed by consumers between November 2018 and October 2020, targeted purchases of items from JD, Size?, Millets, Blacks, Scotts, and Millets Sport.
The retailer, which has alerted the Information Commissioner’s Office about the security incident, stated that it is contacting impacted consumers to warn them about potential fraud.
“We want to apologies to any consumers who may have been harmed by this situation,” said Neil Greenhalgh, chief financial officer of JD Sports. “We are warning people to be wary of possible scam emails, phone calls, and texts and offering information on how to report them.”
According to the company, hackers may have obtained “roughly 10 million unique customers'” names, billing and delivery addresses, phone numbers, purchase details, and the last four digits of payment cards.
However, JD Sports claimed the “affected data is limited” as it did not keep full payment data and the business “had no reason to suspect that account passwords were obtained.”
JD Sports said it had taken the “necessary immediate steps” to investigate and respond to the incident, including working with cybersecurity experts, and to be aware of potential fraud and phishing attacks and “be on the lookout for any suspicious or unusual communications purporting to be from JD Sports or any of our group brands.”
“In the aftermath of this event, we are proceeding with a complete evaluation of our cybersecurity in collaboration with external professionals,” Greenhalgh added. “Protecting our clients’ data is a top responsibility for JD.”
