Human traffickers are charging a huge amount of money to travel illegally to Europe: Report

Rome: It is reported that human traffickers are charging a huge amount of money to travel illegally to Europe. Traffickers reportedly charged €8,000 (about $8,500) for each person who escaped the shipwreck while trying to enter Italy via Turkey.

More bodies were recovered from the sea by rescuers on Tuesday, bringing the death toll from Italy’s migrant disaster to 65.

Relatives and friends of some of the deceased have arrived in Crotone, Calabria, allowing for more time to identify the bodies, the majority of which are from Afghanistan.

The ship sank 100 metres off the coast, killing 65 people, including 14 minors. Approximately 80 people survived, but survivors reported that approximately 170 people were on board when the boat left Izmir, Turkey, last week, implying that many more are believed to have died.

Aid groups at the scene said the entire family was from countries such as Pakistan, Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

According to an Italian police statement, the traffickers charged each person 8,000 euros (approximately $8,500) for the dangerous “death journey.”
