Cheetah cubs to be born in India for the first time in almost 70 years
For the first time in almost 70 years, four newborn cheetahs are mewing and waddling around in India. They are the first cheetah cubs to be born in the wild in the nation since cheetahs became extinct, and they represent a significant step forward in the attempt to reintroduce the species to Indian forests.
On March 24, three days before Sasha died of a kidney illness, Siyaya and ‘rockstar’ Freddie gave birth to the four cubs in Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park. Siyaya means moving forward—who knew that a cheetah discovered in a waterhole in Namibia would lead the way in one of the world’s most ambitious animal conservation efforts.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described it as a “wonderful moment in the history of wildlife conservation in India.” On Twitter, Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav happily announced the birth of the cheetah cubs, while MP Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan shared his delight at the cubs’ arrival.
The cubs looks healthy, according to an officer. Their gender is unknown at this time. Siyaya has hunted twice in the five days following giving birth, showing that she and her cubs are adjusting well to their new surroundings.
