Dublin: Health Minister Stephen Donnelly said that more than 850 new nursing posts will be created in Ireland’s public-sector hospitals this year. This will cost €25 million. According to the minister, recruitment has reached an all-time high in the last three years.
However, Duncan Smith, Labour’s health spokesman, criticised the announcement and the lack of an appointment. But the spokesperson pointed out that the target was not achieved.
The annual conference of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) has repeatedly warned that staff shortages are affecting the entire health sector. In this regard, the report of the employee survey was also published at the conference.
In the meeting, the union representatives unanimously decided to go on strike if the measures including appointment of more employees are not taken by September. The meeting also passed a resolution authorising the organisation to make this decision.
There should be a staff pattern.
The majority of members demanded that serious measures be taken to address the staff shortage. The members demanded that clear and strict rules regarding the staffing pattern be established and followed. The members pointed out that this is what the organisation has been demanding since 2019.
