Attacks on nurses: INMO calls for zero tolerance

Dublin: INMO calls for a zero-tolerance approach to workplace violence. They urged hospital administration to assist staff and report incidents of assault to gardai. ‘A zero-tolerance approach is needed, not now.’

INMO Secretary General Ms Phil Ni Sheaghdha urged the government to take a stronger stance in dealing with attacks on front-line workers and to prosecute employers who “fail to keep workers safe.” She also suggested that workplace inspections be made more stringent.

More than ten nurses, according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO), face “some form of physical, verbal, or sexual assault every day in their workplace.”

The organisation welcomed the announcement by Justice Minister Simon Harris to prioritise legislation to increase the penalties for those who attack frontline workers.
