TikTok Surpasses Two Million Monthly Users in Ireland
TikTok, the popular social media platform, has achieved a significant milestone by reaching two million monthly users in Ireland. The company attributed this achievement to the diverse community of Irish creators who have contributed to its growth.
Cormac Keenan, Head of Trust and Safety at TikTok, expressed appreciation for the Irish creators across various domains who have played a pivotal role in achieving this remarkable figure. He stated, “Our vibrant community of 2 million people across Ireland is made up of book lovers, food enthusiasts, families, musicians, comedians, artists, and much more who turn to TikTok to explore, share their stories, ignite creativity, and spread joy. It has been a privilege to witness TikTok becoming an integral part of Irish culture over the past five years. I extend a heartfelt thank you to the incredible community of Irish creators who have enriched TikTok with their warmth, talents, and authenticity every day.”
It’s worth noting that TikTok has faced scrutiny and concerns about user data privacy, with allegations of sharing personal data with Chinese government agencies. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has cautioned government departments against using the app on work devices.
On another front, TikTok has been granted permission by the High Court to challenge the Data Protection Commission’s (DPC) decision to fine the company €345 million for failing to safeguard children’s privacy on its platform. This legal action is in response to the fine imposed by the DPC following an investigation into TikTok’s privacy settings and features to ensure compliance with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The investigation, initiated by the DPC in September 2021, examined the processing of personal data of individuals under the age of 18 on TikTok and the effectiveness of age verification measures for those under 13, in line with Ireland’s GDPR obligations.
