Ireland’s Broadband Speeds Reach Record Highs, Yet Rural-Urban Gap Widens, Reveals Latest Data Analysis

Recent data analysis by breakingnews.ie reveals that broadband speeds in Ireland have surged to new highs, with a national increase of over 45% in download speeds since early 2022. This positive trend is particularly pronounced in Co. Laois, where a remarkable 82% boost has been recorded.

These improvements coincide with ongoing infrastructure projects on both sides of the border, aimed at providing high-speed fiber broadband to rural households. Despite these advancements, a notable digital divide persists, with numerous remote areas falling below the European Union’s benchmark of 100Mbps.

The study, which examined Ookla’s internet speed test data, highlights the disparity between the fastest and slowest areas, with a substantial 230Mbps gap. Over 600,000 geolocated tests were conducted on average each quarter, mapping results to local electoral boundaries to determine mean download and upload speeds for each region.

Among the top 20 areas with the highest average download speeds, 14 are situated in Dublin, while the remaining locations include Belfast, Carlow, Waterford, Westmeath, Kildare, and Derry. Conversely, regions with the poorest connectivity are identified in Leitrim, Mayo, and Cork. As Ireland experiences a digital evolution, efforts to bridge the rural-urban gap in broadband access remain crucial.
