“Leo Varadkar Officially Resigns as Prime Minister of Ireland”

Dublin: Leo Varadkar has formally resigned from his position as Prime Minister. Handing his resignation letter to President Michael D. Higgins in person at Áras an Uachtaráin, Varadkar will continue in office until Simon Harris assumes the role later today.

Following a three and a half hour meeting with the President, which was also attended by the President’s wife, Sabina, Varadkar met with Northern Ireland Ministers before concluding his visit to the President’s House. Though he greeted the media upon departure, Varadkar refrained from making any statements.

Expressing that the Prime Minister’s role marked the pinnacle of his political career, Varadkar acknowledged the perpetual challenges accompanying such high office. Reflecting on his decision to resign, he emphasized his readiness for a new phase in his life, aiming to contribute as a TD and party member, with plans to decide on future electoral contests later.

Varadkar recounted his administration’s achievements, notably navigating Ireland through the complexities of the Covid pandemic, achieving economic stability, full employment, and fostering a thriving business environment. Proud of advancing societal equality for women, LGBT individuals, and other marginalized groups, Varadkar asserted his role in modernising Ireland.

Addressing societal shifts, Varadkar lamented a decline in civility over the past two decades, citing a prevalence of anger and disparagement amplified by social media. Despite the challenges, Varadkar expressed enduring affection for politics, emphasising its unique opportunities to effect change and engage with diverse perspectives.

In offering advice to Simon Harris, Varadkar urged him to maintain self-belief while seeking counsel, cautioning against forsaking conscience and personal identity. With various options before him, Varadkar suggested lifestyle adjustments, advocating for exercise, nutritious meals, and ample rest to support Harris’s transition into leadership.
