Authorities Unveil Real-Time Strategy to Nab Red-Light Violators on Roads

Dublin: Transport Minister Eamon Ryan has announced plans to enhance road safety measures in Ireland by introducing new camera systems to target drivers who disregard red signals. The initiative, slated to begin with installations in Dublin, comes in response to a concerning rise in road accidents and fatalities.

With 63 road deaths recorded in Ireland thus far this year, marking a 15-death increase compared to the same period last year, the government is prioritising interventions to address this pressing issue. Last year, the nation witnessed 184 road fatalities.

Minister Ryan emphasised the alarming surge in red-signal violations, highlighting the substantial safety risks posed by such behavior. The forthcoming camera systems, expected to be operational by the end of this year or early next year, will capture images of vehicles breaching red lights, enabling authorities to enforce traffic regulations effectively.

In addition to targeting red light violations, efforts to regulate speed limits will be intensified, with local authorities assuming greater responsibility for enforcement. To this end, adjustments will be made to reduce speed limits on non-national primary roads from 100 km/h to 80 km/h and in urban areas from 50 km/h to 30 km/h.

The implementation of lower speed limits is slated to take effect later this year, accompanied by the introduction of three additional speed cameras capable of capturing not only average speeds but also maximum speeds. This measure, akin to the existing system operational at the Port Tunnel in Dublin, aims to curb speeding offences comprehensively.

Minister Ryan further outlined the government’s commitment to road maintenance, earmarking €937 million for this purpose in the current fiscal year. These proactive measures underscore the administration’s dedication to enhancing road safety and mitigating the risk of accidents on Irish roads.
