Justice Minister Updates Cabinet on Plans to Revoke Citizenship Certificates and Boost International Protection Resources
The Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee, has briefed the Cabinet on new initiatives to revoke citizenship certificates and enhance resources for the international protection system. She emphasised that revocation of citizenship would be applied only in very limited circumstances, such as when an individual poses a credible threat to the State or has obtained citizenship fraudulently.
The legislation enabling the revocation of citizenship is expected to be enacted before the Dáil summer recess. Additionally, fines for airlines transporting passengers without valid travel documents will increase from €3,000 to €5,000 per passenger.
Ms. McEntee also announced the recruitment of 400 additional IPAS staff over the next year to maintain processing times, increase removals, and strengthen border security. She highlighted the development of a new resourcing plan to ensure the system operates efficiently, alongside measures from the Migration and Asylum Pact to handle increased application volumes.
The EU Migration and Asylum Pact, which will be debated in the Dáil and Seanad this week, includes provisions for enhanced border security and more rigorous biometric data collection from new arrivals. Despite opposition concerns, the Pact is expected to be approved and supported by new legislation.
Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Mícheál Martin noted that the use of chartered flights for deportations will resume previous practices, often seeing voluntary departures from unsuccessful applicants.
